In this video, Tim Jr. and I start the process of testing negative options for the new 16x20 and 8x20 ultra large format cameras.
We have three core projects lined up for the new cameras and while we are waiting on them to arrive, we are making good use of our time and validating our workflows.
We have extensively tested various darkroom papers to use as negatives, so we know that when it makes sense to use them, we already have a proven workflow and series of methods. We are prioritizing testing based on materials that are available.
We already have a well-established workflow using Ilford FP4 and HP5, we just don't have any of this film for the big cameras right now, so we have to figure out another path for our projects in the short term.
In this episode of the Darkroom Diary, we exposed two sheets of Shanghai GP3 100 film and two sheets of Ilford MGIV RC glossy papers. In order to keep things easy to follow, we developed the Shanghai GP3 film in this episode and share all of the findings and details with you. In the next episode, we are using the film to make silver chloride contact prints to confirm one of our new ultra large format workflows.
I should note that we prioritized exposing and developing the Shanghai GP3 100 film after we determined that we could source some 16x20 and 8x20 Shanghai GP3 100 film. When we recorded the first part of the video, we didn't realize that we were going to be able to find any film so quickly.
