There are four main herds and about 50 horses currently protected by federal law that President Clinton signed on October 3, 1996. Each herd is known by its geographic region (Shawnee Creek, Broadfoot, Rocky Creek, and Round Spring).

We know, based on experience, that their protection is never permanent, and this can change at any time, just like it has for many other federally protected wild horses (i.e., Mesa Verde N.P., Theodor Roosevelt N.P.) and others. These horses were nearly eliminated just a few decades ago, and we would be foolish to think it couldn't happen again.

I share the latest updates with you in my Free Wild Horse Journal, so you can stay connected to them all year long and know what is currently happening. Their stories and adventures will put a smile on your face and surely brighten your day.  By sharing their story, you make a big difference for these wild horses and protect them today and in the future.

True Story

When I saw wild horses for the first time, I was not prepared for what would happen. I lost track of time, and I was lost in the moment.  It was a euphoric experience that I will forever remember, and my awe and appreciation continue to grow over time.

My primary goal and mission are to connect people emotionally to these amazing wild horses so they can remain wild and free forever.

Tim Layton at Rocky Creek Herd on 3/29/20Tim Layton at Rocky Creek Herd on 3/29/20 I want to celebrate the beauty and awe of Shannon Counties' wild horses and use visual art to show that wild horses have feelings, emotions, and personalities, just like human beings.

I believe these horses have just as much right to live and be free as we do.

In my Free Wild Horse Journal, I share the latest information and stories about these horses to help you stay connected to them all year long.

You can watch my latest adventures in the field with the horses as I create my next short film, and you can join other wild horse lovers and me from around the world in my Facebook Group dedicated to the Wild Horses of Shannon County, Missouri.

I know from firsthand observations wild horses have empathy, share special bonds, and work together as a family.

Shannon County has four distinct seasons and a wide range of weather ranging from beautiful spring days to 110-degree summer heat to below freezing harsh winter conditions.

The wild horses in Shannon County endure a lot of complex and challenging situations.  Watching them survive the brutal weather conditions and continue to thrive is a fascination and spiritual experience.
