Tim Sr. and Tim Jr. at Hodgson Mill For Darkroom Underground Episode 1 08/28/2021Tim Sr. and Tim Jr. at Hodgson Mill For Darkroom Underground Episode 1 08/28/2021 The lenses that I have listed on this page are lenses that we are actively using on our ultra large format camera systems. We are also working on a large format database that covers up to 8x10.

I have wished for decades that someone would host a page with information and sample prints made with relevant ultra large format lenses, but since that did not happen, I decided to do the work and ask for help from other fellow ultra large format photographers.

This is a work in process, but we are determined to create photos with every one of the lenses listed on this page so you can get a great idea of its perspective and performance and confirm coverage for each format.

We also produce videos about each lens on our YouTube Channel, so make sure you subscribe to the channel and join the newsletter so you don't miss anything.

Schneider 47 1/2" (1206mm) F15 APO Red Dot Artar (in Aluminum Barrel)

(See Photos)

Schneider Goerz 47 1/2 inch F15 Red Dot Artar ULF Lens - www.timlaytonfineart.comSchneider Goerz 47 1/2 inch F15 Red Dot Artar ULF Lens - www.timlaytonfineart.com

F15-128 019 20x24+ 1025mm Big Bertha has massive coverage: 1:10 28"x36", 1:5 30"x35", 1:2 36"x45", 1:1 48"x64".  The Schneider version of this lens is very rare to find and mine is in the lightweight aluminum barrel making it extremely rare.  The regular Goerz version of this lens weighs over 8 pounds and mine is half the weight at 4 pounds. The Goerz brand is still difficult to find, but if you are patient one will occasionally come up on eBay. I have to install my extension board to use this on my 16x20 camera but natively works on 20x24. Mounting hole = 105mm.  Width of Mounting flange = 137mm. My Sinar size standard lens boards are 139mm wide, so this lens will mount on my current config by 2mm!

Schneider 35" (889mm) F12.5 APO Red Dot Artar (in Aluminum Barrel)

(See Photos)

Schneider Goerz 35 inch F12.5 Red Dot Artar - www.timlaytonfineart.comSchneider Goerz 35 inch F12.5 Red Dot Artar - www.timlaytonfineart.com

F12.5-128 056 20x24 800mm The 47 1/2" lens above is "Big Bertha" and this one is its little sister "Little Bertha".  Massive coverage: 1:10 (20"24"), 1:5 (22"x28"), 1:2 (28"x36"), 1:1 (36"x45"). Artar lenses cover approximately 46 degrees.
It is reasonable to find the Goerz version on eBay if you watch for it, but the Schneider version is very rare and much lighter because it is in an aluminum barrel at about 3 pounds. This focal length is a good choice for a long lens on 16x20 too.

F13 + 5 manual stops none 20x24 800mm 30" is a normal lens on the 20x24 format. The TT Signature lens is a single-element meniscus design that has a custom-turned barrel system that allows you to exchange elements from 9" to 30" in the same barrel.  Literally, one lens barrel with various single elements is all that is needed. I currently own the 9", 10.5", 18", 24", and working on the 30". My YouTube review of this lens.

F12.5-128 788069 20x24 762mm 30 inches is a normal lens on the 20x24.  This lens will have limited movements on the 20x24.  This focal length is also a good choice for 16x20 when you want something longer than the 24" normal lens, but not as long as the 35".  Plenty of room for movements on the 16x20 with this lens.

F4.5 Signature on Front Achromat 11x14 (maybe more) TBD

This 19th-century very rare ULF Petzval lens comes from the absolute most exclusive French lensmaker in the world: Derogy.

Derogy was one of the very early and achieved high respect for his photographic lenses. Like most early lenses this lens comes without an engraving on the outer sleeve, but it has fine writings on the front achromat as shown in the photos, with the maker's name.

The lens has a focal length of 450mm at a speed of F4.5. It will cover 11x14 for sure and testing will confirm 8x10, 14x17, and possibly 16x20 with some vignetting.

Nikon Nikkor 480mm (19 in) APO (barrel) - F9 F9-F128 none 20x24 TBD Huge coverage with this well-known copy lens. It will likely cover mammoth size plates.
Rodenstock APO Gerogon 360mm (14 in) F11 F11-F180 8779237 16x20 TBD This is a new lens for me.  I am working on getting a mounting flange made.

F11-F64 838455 12x20 TBD The Goerz Blue Dot Trigor lens is very rare and rarely seen for sale. This lens follows the same principles as the Red Dot Artar series.  It has coverage for my 8x20 and 11x14.  I need to verify the degree of coverage on my 16x20.

F9-F32 11401187 16x20 TBD This lens is small and light.  Great lens when weight is a concern. It is a reasonable wide-angle lens on a 16x20 format for a lot of people.  I tend to use my Rodenstock Sironar-W 300mm F5.6 lens for wide angle on 16x20 and my ultra-wide angle lens of choice is the Schneider Super-Symmar 210mm XL F5.6.

F5.6-F45 10989611 16x20   This lens is nothing short of incredible in terms of coverage, but also in terms of sharpness and resolution.  I love soft focus Pictorialist images, but this lens is the exact opposite of that which is great.  I think it will cover 20x24, but need to verify.

F5.6-F64 TBD 16x20 500 This lens will cover 16x20 for sure, and possibly 20x24.  I will verify once I can on the 20x24.  This is crazy wide on 16x20 and 8x20 too.  I love using this for landscapes where you want an exaggerated foreground. Nothing not to love about this lens other than the price.

Schneider Super Angulon 210 F8

(Verified Coverage on 8x20)

F8-F90 TBD 8x20 500 Great lens, but the 210 Super-Symmar XL is a stop faster at F5.6 and a fraction of the size and weight. If you want a 210 lens and can't afford the XL, but you can deal with the size and weight, then you will be very happy with this lens. Michael Wellman confirmed full coverage on the 8x20.
Schneider Super-Symmar XL 150mm F5.6 F5.6-F64 TBD 7x17 386 I tried this lens on my 8x20, but it was a little short.  It will cover 7x17 and be crazy wide.
