I explored the Rocky Mountains several times this year and I thought I would pass along some simple, but highly important tips that I learned the hard way while out exploring and photographing the epic landscapes of the Rockies.

Tip # 1 – when finding a place for camping (boondocking) make sure the direction that you will be sleeping places your head at a higher elevation if your vehicle is not flat! I think I have learned this lesson a few times now, so hopefully I only have to make the mistake a few more times before it becomes part of my routine.

Tip # 2 – Before making a final decision about a camping location, check for the quality of your WiFi signal (if that is important to you). I was at a lower elevation in some very thick trees and then moved to a higher elevation thinking my signal would improve. I was wrong.

Tip # 3 – I wanted to prove to myself that I need to get a Verizon MiFi hotspot in addition to my AT&T unit before spending the money. As you may have already guessed, it was proven to me the very first day of the trip. I could not get any signal at all with my AT&T MiFi in the Rocky Mountains near Crested Butte Colorado and my friend happen to have a Verizon unit. I went to the store the very next day and bought a new 6620L MiFi unit. The new Verizon unit has continued to provide a high quality connection where my AT&T device has either failed or a much poorer signal.

I look forward to your comments below.
