My Long Awaited 4x5 Travelwide is Finally Here!

October 31, 2015  •  6 Comments

I was one of the original 1,026 supporters of the Travelwide Kickstarter Project that originated back in April, 2013.  As a group, we raised $128,685 USD to bring this camera to life.  It is now October 2015, and I have finally received the camera.  It felt like 100 years because I have wanted the concept of this camera for as long as I can remember.  The ability to use 4x5 large format sheet film in an ultra-light and portable format, almost like I would use a small format roll film camera is a source of joy for a large format photographer.

You can view more photos and read more about the camera on their website.  It is my understanding that they are filling all of the Kickstarter orders first, and then they will process new orders.

I have fitted my Travelwide with a Schneider Angulon 90mm F6.8 lens mounted on a Compur shutter.  I am using my Mamiya 7 Rangefinder viewfinder for my 43/50mm lens when I want to use the camera like a rangefinder hand-held, and I don't plan on looking through the ground glass on back of the camera.  For metering, I am using my Voigtlander VC II meter.  As you can see in the photos, I used high-tech gaffers tape to shape and support the cable release.

My initial plan is to use Ilford HP5+ and use it with an EI range between 250 and 1600 as needed for hand-held use.  For color, Portra 400 is an obvious choice that should produce exciting images.  I will post a new article with photos after I develop my first batch of sheet films. I think the real challenge will be deciding how many sheet film holders I want to pack and take with me.

Hi Daniel, thanks for the question. I have found the meter to work very well. Black and white film, especially Tri-X is very forgiving.

How do you like that meter? is it accurate enough indoors?

Nifty looking camera Tim. Same idea I have for my Alpenhause 110B 4x5 conversion camera. I may be interested in this after I see some images.

Tim I think everyone will be interested in seeing the photos this camera produces.
